Henry Stauf was an only child. Quiet with an occasional violent outburst, courtesy of his often drunk father. As he left home he made ends meet with odd jobs, but when the Depression struck he was shunned by all.
No life, no possessions, no dreams. Just filled with anger and hatred. And that’s when the Voices told him to make a doll. A wonderfully lifelike doll, which became so popular that he opened up his own shop. But as a mysterious disease claimed many children a dark rumor started to spread that somehow Stauf and his lifelike dolls were involved.
The Voices told him to build a mansion far away from everyone and wait for a very special guest.
Former Miss Harley-on-the-Hudson’s (1923) Martine Burden was going to make it in the Big Apple. She was smart, beautiful and knew exactly how to get her way. But the competition was fierce and instead of becoming a star on Broadway she never became more than a chorusgirl.
When she got dumped for an even younger mistress she returned disillusioned and bitter to the boring backwater town she grew up in, which now felt twice as small.
Then an invitation from the town’s only successful man dropped on her doorstep. There was at least one man that appreciated her sophistication. This was her ticket out of here. And this time for good.
Little James Blake loved magic. He spent countless hours with his 5 cent magic kit. He had a knack for it too and soon wowed audiences as the Amazing James Blake, then as the Amazing Abdallah and finally as the Amazing Hamilton Temple.
But by then Temple was no longer the big hit he had once been. His fingers just weren’t as quick anymore. And pretty soon his career dried up. Magic had brought him the spotlight and now it had taken it away.
No one knew Blake had taken up residence in a small town outside New York. So when an invitation fell on his doorstep for the Amazing Hamilton Temple it seemed like magic once again..
Julia came from a long and proud lineage. The Heine family was one of the founding families of the town and owners of the prestigious Heine Hotel. But the Depression hit the family and the hotel hard.
And as she hit fifty both her and the hotel had seen their best days. Julia found herself alone in a hotel that was crumbling down around her. And the trips to the wine cellar became more and more frequent. The last heir to the Heine name was taking the family down with her.
Until one day an invitation came. Perhaps this could give her the second chance she was so desperately looking for.
Elinor was always taught to help others. And she did so through her charity work at the church or at the soup kitchen. She loved children and prayed to have one of her own someday. Unfortunately she and Edward were unable to conceive.
The sad and dependent Elinor started to suffer ‘spells,’ as Edward called them. Ghostly visions of things to come. But he forbade her to ever speak of those to anyone.
When the toymaker’s invitation came to the Knox residence, Elinor felt a dark feeling in the pit of her stomach growing.
Edward never understood why things turned out so miserable. He had gone to school, studied accountancy as his parents demanded and he married his high school sweetheart Elinor. But now thirty years later he hit rock bottom.
The accountancy firm he took over from his father was circling the drain and his marriage had turned into a childless and loveless affair. Unable to provide for Elinor in a matter she was accustomed to Edward took out loans and found himself unable to pay them back.
When the unexpected invitation from the wealthy toymaker came, this surely was the answer to solve all their financial problems.
Brian saw his older brother slide under the ice in a skating accident. Instead of helping, young Brian reasoned that all his brother’s toys and his parents’ attention would now be his.
This reasoning fueled him through his adult life as well. Businessman Brian Dutton was only out there for number one. And when he got an invitation to spend a night at the mansion of the successful toymaker he jumped at the chance.
This invitation could mean only one thing, money. And lots of it.
Tad was a bright kid, but his parents couldn’t afford to pay for his education. Little Tad was fascinated by the toys and puzzles the brilliant mister Stauf had made, unfortunately he couldn’t buy any of them.
All the children in the nearby towns knew of the foreboding house the enigmatic Mister Stauf locked himself away in. But only Tad saw that one night all the lights were turned on. And as several guests arrived at the mansion his curiosity got the better of him and he snuck in.
Finally he would be able to play the puzzles.
